A healing separation is a temporary separation of two partners who are struggling in their relationship. A healing separation is intended to give couples the time and space they need to work on their individual and relationship issues in order to heal and reconnect.

There are many reasons why couples might choose to try a healing separation. Some common reasons include:

  • Addressing communication problems
  • Working on individual issues, such as anger management or depression
  • Rebuilding trust after an infidelity
  • Giving each other space to figure out what they want in the relationship

A healing separation can be a very positive experience for couples who are willing to put in the work. It is not the same as a legal separation because it is an informal agreement between spouses, not a legally recognized contract outlining rules and expectations around financial issues, child custody and support, division of assets and debts and spousal support.

However, a healing separation does not always result in the relationship surviving. In some cases, couples may realize that they are better off apart. Even in these cases, where the relationship does ultimately end, a healing separation can be helpful in allowing tensions to cool and ultimately paving the way for a smooth, more amicable divorce process.

If you are considering a healing separation, here are some tips to make it successful:

  • Set clear goals and expectations — What do you hope to achieve by separating? How long will the separation last? What ground rules will you follow? It is important to discuss these issues with your partner and come to an agreement before making the decision to separate.
  • Maintain communication — It is important to stay in touch with your partner during the separation, even if it is just to check in. You can communicate in person, over the phone or through email or text messaging.
  • Seek professional help — A therapist can provide you with support and guidance during the separation process. They can also help you to identify and work on the issues that are contributing to your relationship problems.
